Member Spotlight: Winkler Food Bank raises funds for a new space

The Winkler and District Food Bank took part in an ‘Off Ice’ fundraiser to raise $40,000 to transition to a larger building. The food bank operates out of a community centre called Central Station Community Centre.

Members of the local Winkler Flyers hockey team were boosted onto the roof of the Central Station’s new location by the Winkler Fire Department. There was only one rule, that the Flyers could only come down once the funds were raised.

The funds raised will be used to pay for the massive renovations needed to seat over 240 people in the new Central Station Community Centre on Main Street right next to Red River College in Winkler.

Abe Froese, the Food Bank Coordinator said the goal for Tuesday was met after only 2.5 hours. “Central Station’s goal was not only met, but well exceeded any expectations. By the end of the day they had raised over $70,000.

We are very grateful and proud of how our community pulled together and made this a success!”

Central Station is a community centre in the heart of Winkler that began in September of 2013. They have a drop-in space that is open Monday – Friday and offer a variety of programs year-round. They work closely with the Winkler & District Food Cupboard and Cafe 545 Community Meal as they believe food brings people together! They are a hub that can help connect community members to the resources they’re needing.

Harvest is proud to have Winkler District Food Bank in its Community Food Network and please join us in congratulating them in this amazing accomplishment!
